Tuscany - Italian Wine Region

Tuscany is home to a diverse range of grape varieties, both native and international. The region's red wines are made primarily from Sangiovese, a grape variety that is well-suited to the area's climate and soils. Other important red grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. White wines in Tuscany are generally made from Trebbiano and Vermentino grapes.

The Tuscan wine region is divided into several appellations, each with its own set of regulations and requirements. Here are some of the most important appellations in Tuscany: 

Chianti:

Chianti is perhaps the most famous Tuscan wine appellation, known for its high-quality Sangiovese-based wines. The Chianti appellation is divided into seven sub-zones, each with its own set of regulations. The most famous of these sub-zones is Chianti Classico, which is located in the heart of Tuscany and is known for producing some of the region's finest wines.

Brunello di Montalcino:

Brunello di Montalcino is another famous Tuscan appellation, located in the southern part of Tuscany. The appellation is known for its full-bodied, rich red wines made from Sangiovese grapes. To be labeled as Brunello di Montalcino, the wine must be aged for at least four years, including at least two years in oak barrels.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano:

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is an appellation located in the eastern part of Tuscany, known for its medium-bodied red wines made primarily from Sangiovese grapes. To be labeled as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the wine must be aged for at least two years, including at least one year in oak barrels.

Bolgheri:

Bolgheri is a relatively new appellation, established in the 1990s. The appellation is located on the coast of Tuscany and is known for its high-quality Bordeaux-style red wines, made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.

Super Tuscans:

Super Tuscans are high-end wines that do not fit into any specific Tuscan appellation. These wines are often made from international grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, and are known for their high quality and high price tags.
